Pastor David Manning
Have you ever wondered why our church speaks a lot about membership, particularly this time of year? Maybe you’ve also wondered why membership to a church should even be considered?
Membership is not uncommon in our society and I expect that many in our churches are members of some club, organisation or group. I couldn’t tell you off the top of my head how many places and groups I hold membership, but it is a number. We all make decisions to join something because of many reasons, maybe it’s the benefits, the discounts or preferential seating.
So why consider being a member of the church? Membership isn’t a pass to come to church, as we allow everyone to come to church and we want everyone to be involved in thhe church whether they are a member or not. So for the church it’s not the promotion of benefits, discounts or even preferential seating because anyone can sit next to me in church.
Membership at WPCC is having this experience of belonging. Similar to a relationship with Christ and in Christ. They are different because with Christ it is about knowing Him, while in Christ is a commitment of following Him. Churches are the same, where people come and be at church or people come and belong to a church and see it as theirs, shared with others.
That’s what membership brings, the experience that WPCC is your church, a place where God has called you and gives you this peace that you have a spiritual home. A home where family exists, where you are cared for and a place you are encouraged to grow.
Having ownership that is shared with others is a good thing and something I encourage everyone to have in all our church sites. This creates accountability among us and nurtures transparency which is very important.
The Bible talks about the church as a body and everyone in the church, no matter what position they hold or involvement they have, are members of it. “For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.” 1 Corinthians 12:12
Belonging to the church makes us all equal, but the giftings we have makes us different and allows us to work together. The Bible explains membership that when we belong we create the body and being different makes the body function. But the head will never change because He is Christ and the One who we have decided we will follow and belong to Him.
WPCC has made a commitment to be obedient to Christ, as the Head of our church. Christ is glorified and worshipped here. Find your experience of belonging by being part of a church body that is accountable to each other and operates with transparency. Make WPCC a church that you can call “my church” through being part of everything we do through membership.
